DESCRIPTION

With a melting point higher than 3,410°C, tungsten has the best temperature behaviour of all common metals. It is also noncombustible and offers very high mechanical characteristics.

The most common grades are alloys at >90%W + Ni/Fe or Ni/Cu.

Thanks to their extremely high densities, tungsten and its alloys are suitable for X-ray and gamma ray shielding screens. They are used in particular in the manufacture of collimator or container components.

Tungsten: radiation protection properties

It has excellent resistance to gamma radiation. However, under neutron flux, it produces capture gamma rays, with energies between 1 and 7 MeV and is strongly activated.
